JRA says the celebration marked the: “Culmination of extensive efforts to improve road safety and mitigate flooding risks in the region.”
In the Far East Bank, Kunene, JRA, and the councillor of Ward 105, Tefo Raphadu, were celebrating the successful completion of the road rehabilitation and storm water system upgrade project, which JRA undertook to address flooding in the area.

JRA said the cost of the project, which began in March 2024 and concluded in December, amounted to over R22m. It further noted that the project involved extensive upgrades, including the installation of storm water pipes, construction of kerb inlets and outlets, asphalt surfacing, road marking and signage, and construction of speed humps.
The transport MMC emphasised the project’s positive impact on the community, highlighting that it created employment opportunities. “We are pleased to report that the initiatives created employment opportunities for two community liason officers, approximately 83 labourers, and 11 small, micro, and medium-sized enterprises (SMMEs) for civil engineering works.”

Raphadu said he was happy that the flood intervention project had addressed the issues of flooding in the area. He added that at least ten streets have been attended to, and will no longer have flooding problems.

He said he hopes that phase two of the project gets approved, so they can attend to other areas as well.
“This was phase one of the project. We intend to do the entire far east and the entire Tsutsumane, because it was built in the lower lying areas, so, its prone to flooding. We are hoping that phase two of the project will be approved very soon, so that we can touch other areas that are also affected by flooding when it rains.”
